Ideal Weight Calculator

Calculate your ideal body weight using multiple proven formulas

Understanding Ideal Body Weight

Ideal body weight is an estimate of what your weight should be based on your height and gender. This calculator provides results from four different formulas (Robinson, Miller, Devine, and Hamwi) and calculates an average. These formulas are commonly used in medical settings to estimate ideal weight for medication dosing and general health assessment.

Ideal Weight Formulas

Robinson Formula (1983):

Men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet

Miller Formula (1983):

Men: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet

Devine Formula (1974):

Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet

Hamwi Formula (1964):

Men: 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet

Important Considerations

While ideal weight formulas provide useful estimates, it's important to understand their limitations:

  • These formulas don't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition
  • They may not be accurate for very tall or very short individuals
  • Athletes with high muscle mass may weigh more than the "ideal" but still be healthy
  • Body frame size (small, medium, large) can affect ideal weight
  • Age and activity level are not considered in these formulas
  • BMI and body fat percentage may provide additional context

Important Note: Ideal weight calculations provide estimates based on height and gender only. These formulas are primarily used for medical purposes such as medication dosing. For personalized weight goals and health assessments, consider factors like body composition, muscle mass, activity level, and overall health. Consult with a healthcare provider or registered dietitian for personalized guidance.
